A long day yesterday; departed Lyon at 9.30am on a beautiful, comfortable – and fast (up to just under 300 km/hr) train, through the snowcapped French alps, before arriving at Milan with sufficient time for a wander through the historic Milan railway station, then boarding another comfortable train for the equally long journey to Naples, via Rome. We arrived ten and a half hours after we left Lyon, but the time passed pleasantly.
A short
walk to our hotel for the night then we arose this morning to find that
Elizabeth had further damaged her left leg after three weeks with an inflamed
achilles and had difficulty weight bearing, so we spent several hours gingerly
negotiating our way around the bustling Garibaldi Square leading off the
Railway Station, having to cope with the entire population of Naples out to
enjoy the Easter Monday public holiday.
After lunch
in the Square we ‘hobbled’ to our nearby apartment where we are staying for the
next four nights. It was once part of a palace, though we couldn’t find out the
history as our host does not speak English. Huge rooms with high ceilings and original
terrazzo floors. Hopefully no ghosts.
